I took Daisy to the vet yesterday. This was her fourth visit (yes, four in 2.5 months). The main purpose was to finally get her rabies shot. She should have had it two weeks ago when she got a couple of boosters. But at the time she'd also just been stung by a bumblebee. The vet determined that it would be best to not aggravate her system any further than it already was, and to wait on the rabies shot. No problem.
Unfortunately, I also had to ask what to do about the runs. Her poop had been loose for several days, and wasn't really showing any signs of improvement. The vet tech that gave her the shot said the best way to reset the system (assuming no big underlying problems - parasites, fever, etc - which she didn't have) was to withhold food for 24 hours, then start her back up on rice & boiled ground beef (to get rid of most of the fat, I would assume). Oh, boy.
The appointment had been at about noon. She got treats for being a "good puppy." I managed to hold out until about 2:30 or 3:00 before her pitiful looks, whining and general moaning about forced me to give in. I grudgingly doled out half a ration of her normal kibble. More pitiful behavior ensued. She got another half ration for a late supper. On our evening walk, her stool was more normal. Half ration for breakfast, another normal stool. Three-quarters ration for lunch - no runs yet. Coming up on dinnertime, and I'm considering a full ration - she seems to be feeling better today. Not nearly as bitey as she was the last three days, so I'm hoping she's through it.
Because I'm a softie, and can't refuse my dog food, even if it's the best thing for her.
Hmm. I wonder if she's less bitey today because the first time she went after me this morning, I bit her back? (Dogs don't taste very good.)
I'm also trying to manufacture some homemade dog treats. So far it's not going that great, but it's a work in progress. If they turn out at all, I'll post the recipe.
